What are fat injections?
Fat injections are a process of harvesting/extracting fat from localized areas in your body and transplanting them to other parts of the body to improve the appearance or add filler to the body.
Fat injections can be an effective way to reduce wrinkles, diminish acne scarring and regain a more youthful appearance by using ones own fat.
By injecting human fat harvested from your own body a plastic surgeon can enhance facial fullness, fill deep facial creases, soften wrinkles, plump up lips, and build up the shallow contours of the face.
Am I candidate for facial fat injection?
Unlike other cosmetic injectable facial fillers that are made from synthetic products, fat injections do not pose a possibility of causing an allergic reaction since the fat tissue is taken from your own body. However, fat injections do not stop the continuing aging process, facial augmentation with human fat may help delay the need for more invasive surgical procedures, such as a face lift, forehead lift, eyebrow lift or other types of facial surgery.
The best way to determine if you are a candidate for a fat injection is through a consultation with Dr. Bootstaylor. She can help you determine if facial fat grafting would work for you.

How is the fat injection performed?
Fat injection procedures are usually performed as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia. The procedure usually takes roughly around 30 minutes to an hour to perform, depending on the patient, the volume of fat to be extracted and injected, and any additional procedures that are being completed at the same time.
Fat is harvested and withdrawn from certain areas of the body (usually around the abdomen or hips). It’s extracted by either using a needle or through a suction tube called a cannula.
Once enough fat is taken from the donor location, it is then separated using a centrifuge, which spins the fat and removes impurities and separates the fat globules by size.
The fat is then injected slowly into areas using a beading technique via a blunt small canula, passing it in and out of the treated area multiple times. This creates a thread of fat globules in small pockets within the skin.
What are the results can I expect?
A patient will see almost immediate results from a fat injection. However, the treated areas may appear too swollen at first and may take several weeks before normalcy will return to the treated area.
Over a period of time, the swelling will subside, and the patient will usually be able to see the intended results with full results expected in three to four months. After this period of time, the patient may lose fat from the injected areas as their body metabolizes it.
In general, about half of the injected fat is absorbed back into the body in about three to six months. However, fat injections offer rejuvenate properties unlike standard hyluronic acid facial fillers including:
- Scar revision
- Increase in permanent facial tissue
- Regenerative properties
What type of recovery is required?
Patients who undergo facial fat injections can usually return to their normal daily routines a few days after treatment. However, bruising, swelling, and redness in both the donor and injected areas is common and expected, but usually only lasts a few weeks.
The recovery period may be longer sometimes as a result of the amount of fat removed. During recovery, a patient should avoid sun exposure and may wear coverup makeup with a high UV protection to both disguise and protect the effected areas.
Are fat injections safe?
Most all surgical procedures carry some risk. However there are some possible complications which include:
- Fatty cysts
- Fat embolism
